چکیده
BackgroundAcute Flaccid Paralyses Surveillance (AFPS) monitors the emergence of polioviruses and can track Non-Polio Enteroviruses (NPEVs). We report AFPS activity in Lombardy region (Northern Italy) from 2016 to 2018.MethodsFecal respiratory samples were collected children <15 years who met WHO definition an AFP case, analyzed by virus isolation cell cultures (RD/L20B) a one-step real-time RT-PCR assay specific for 5?-noncoding-region NPEV. NPEV-positive specimens further sequencing fragment VP1 gene.Results36 cases (89 stool 32 samples) reported with incidence 1.1/100’000, 0.9/100’000, 0.6/100’000 2016, 2017, 2018, respectively. Poliovirus was not identified, whereas NPEVs detected 19.4% (7/36) cases. The presence one Echovirus-25 (2016), two EV- D68 (2016 2018), EV-A71 Echovirus-30 (2016) sharing high nucleotide identity Europe identified.ConclusionThe absence polio confirmed. unpredicted detection emerging EV-D68, EV-A71, E-30 sequence similarity viruses involved latest outbreaks, provided valuable up-to-date information, emphasizing importance monitoring through AFPS.

Non-Polio Enteroviruses from Acute Flaccid Paralysis Surveillance in Shandong Province, China, 1988–2013
Enteroviruses (EVs) are important human pathogens associated with various clinical syndromes. This study represents an overview of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) isolated from acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance in Shandong Province, China from 1988 to 2013. Altogether 792 and 170 NPEV isolates were isolated from stool specimens of 9263 AFP cases and 1059 contacts, respectively. Complet...
متن کاملDetection of Non-Polio Enteroviruses From 17 Years of Virological Surveillance of Acute Flaccid Paralysis in the Philippines
Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance has been conducted as part of the World Health Organization (WHO) strategy on poliomyelitis eradication. Aside from poliovirus, which is the target pathogen, isolation, and identification of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) is also done by neutralization test using pools of antisera which can only identify limited number of NPEVs. In the Philippines, de...
متن کاملAdequacy of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) Surveillance Indicators for Iran in 2016
Eradication of polio as a largest public health innovation is led by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the world (1). The main strategies to reach this goal included improved routine immunization, adequate response to outbreaks and effective surveillance (2). Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance has considered as a comprehensive program for polio eradication, by identification of are...
متن کاملPolio Eradication and Acute Flaccid Paralysis Surveillance
Since 1988, when the World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate polio, the number of polio cases worldwide has decreased from 350,000 to fewer than 800 cases in 2003. This was achieved through high vaccination coverage, augmented by quality surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and mop-up vaccination campaigns. Although the European region was certified “poliofree” in 2002, as long as...
متن کاملThe Association of Non-polio Enteroviruses with Aseptic Meningitis in Children in Iran
Introduction : Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the leptomeninges as a manifestation of central nervous system (CNS) infection, and more than 85% of viral meningitis cases are caused by non-polio enteroviruses. Molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are increasingly used to detect and type non-polio enteroviruses. Here, we describe the impact of these viruses on asept...
